There is an upset at the University of Belize and the unions are preparing to step in.  Reports are that the institution’s Board removed the union rep,Dr June Young from the meetings and proceeded to cut salaries by 30% for the faculty and staff.  We received a copy of a letter addressed to UB’s Chairman Harrison Pilgrim from the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union, explaining the basis of their upset and planned protest. The letter reads, in part, quote, “We have been advised that at the last board meeting, on the basis of an oral presentation by the President, the Board determined by a vote that the university was in a state of financial exigency. No documentary evidence was presented prior to that vote. No effects on the employees of the university were indicated. This is unacceptable. It is clear that the President has from the beginning excluded the union from this process and in fact has not disclosed any financial information that would provide us with the ability to make an informed decision.”  End of quote.  Love News understands that the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) are of the belief that the UB Board is not acting in the interest of transparency, since the Union was not consulted and therefore not able to bargain on behalf of the staff and faculty. According to the union, the President, Emeritus Clement Sankat, gave an oral presentation after which the Board determined by a vote that the university was in a state of financial constraint. However, they did not present any documentary evidence prior to this vote. The union believes the President knowingly excluded the union from the process by not disclosing any financial information to them that would enable them to make an informed decision. UBFSU is also accusing the President of union busting. Love News is following this story as the union has given UB until July 9, 2020 to provide them with a Financials for 2018 – 2019 and whatever may be available for 2019 -2020 as well as any policy that the board may have devised regarding financials and matters of redundancy.  The union noted that once they have received the documents they are prepared to meet and discuss the way forward.
