Government is once again being called out for a lack of transparency and accountability. According to the Chairman of the UDP, Michael Peyrefitte, getting information from within the government has been painful and impossible. His comments were spurred from the silence of the Integrity Commission, and the unanswered letters regarding government business.
Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman, UDP: “Now since 2020 getting information out of this government, a government that promised to be transparent if they were to ever come to government is the most difficult thing to do. You just cannot get information that you’re entitled to under the law from this government. The hypocrisy is crazy. You know I heard the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that one of the issues he had with the Coastal Road was a matter of transparency. They preach about transparency so much but in this time and this era when they’re in government now the last thing they honor is transparency. So good luck for the media getting information out of them but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. So they’re right there the members are public for everybody to know, the chairperson everybody knows so go to that body and get the information that you want or at the very least show the public that they’re uncooperative if they don’t want to make the information public.”
The Integrity Commission was sworn in late 2022, but have been notably silent since then.
