UDP Chairman Condemns Killing of Coast Guard Member, Calls Attention to Societal Issues

UDP Chairman Michael Peyrefitte has condemned the killing of Seaman Apprentice, Charles James.  Peyrefitte was once served as the Minister of National Security under the Dean Barrow administration alluded to serious issues in society that has led to the killing of law enforcement personnel.

Michael Peyrefitte, UDP Party Chairman: “You know when anybody dies in the country especially you know criminal related killings you feel a sadness overall because there doesn’t seem to be a sense of law and order in the country. But when you have members of the security forces being killed needlessly then it is really a concern because you would hope – it’s like for example when people are assumed to possess a certain level of decency that you wouldn’t do certain things to a child, you wouldn’t do certain things to an adult, anybody who is serious enough and committed enough to do something or to violate a member of the security forces is a serious contender. And for a person to think that that is nothing for them to do it tells you that there is a mood. There is a mood in the country right now that people feel like to hell with law and order, to hell with what people think is going on they would do what they want and it’s almost that they’re confident that they will get away with it or that no big deal will be made of it. We are living in a time now where life seems to be very very cheap and there doesn’t seem to be anything in place to arrest the trend that we’re on not even the state of emergency is stopping certain things. So it makes you wonder how worse it will get. But certainly having worked closely with the Coast Guard when I was there it saddens me because I know for a fact how hard they work, how hard they train, the level of commitment and there’s a lot of training and investment that goes into a member of the security services and so when you lose that you’re not just losing a life which I mean is everything but you’re losing an expert, you’re losing a professional and it makes it just bad upon bad. So it’s not a good feeling. It’s not a good look. We see other people in the security forces getting involved in these different things. I mean it’s not a good look and if it’s a morale problem then there must be changes to what’s going on.”

Peyrefitte was the substantive Minister of National Security from February to November 2020.
