Earlier in the news, we heard from the UDP Chairman and Shadow Minister for National Security, Senator Michael Peyrefitte, who called for the resignation of the Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, the Ministry’s CEO. Kevin Arthurs, and the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams. In discussing his rationale for the resignations, Peyrefitte says that Belize is on track for yet another violent year. Here’s how he broke down the statistics.
Michael Peyrefitte, UDP Chairman: “And the numbers don’t lie period from January to April for 2021 we had 30 murders. January to April 2022 we have 43 murders, 23 of them in Belize City. We are on pace to have 39 more murders this year than we had last year and we are not talking about the couple of murders that have occurred in May already. There’s just a sense of lawlessness and a lack of control because when we say numbers the PUP like to say ‘you are comparing us to you all but how will you compare us to you all… No we are comparing you to yourself. We are comparing 2022 to 2021 since you’ve been in government. It’s not working. Overall crime when you look at the statistics of overall crime up to the same period or rather from April 1st to April 22nd as we did in the press conference 33 incidents of violence crime, murder, robbery, rape. Last year the same period was 11 less.”
