UDP Deputy Chairman’s comments on Taiwan not the position of the party says Opposition Leader

In related news, a few weeks back we reported on the attack on Taiwan, by the Deputy Chairman of the United Democratic Party, Alberto August.  On a local talk show, August phoned in and accused the Taiwan officials in Belize of being dangerously close to the current administration, and of funding their municipalities.  Opposition Leader, Moses Shyne Barrow, commented on the statements made by August, saying that he was not speaking on behalf of the UDP.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “Party position is that we support Taiwan. We’re very grateful for all Taiwan has done for Belize not for any political -”

Ernesto Vasquez, Host, The Morning Show: But you still believe they’re being politically biased ?

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “My brother you have to allow me to answer the question. I have never said that the Taiwanese are being politically biased.”

Ernesto Vasquez, Host, The Morning Show: But your Deputy Chairman said that.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “Okay and I am telling you that that is not the party’s position. He was speaking as to his opinion. We have discussed that matter internally and we reaffirm our solidarity and our appreciation for the Taiwanese people and what they have done for Belize. It is something that I will discuss with the Ambassador. The concerns that maybe the Deputy Chair has I believe those are things that amongst friends we don’t discuss those things publicly. I believe that if there is a concern that yes we know you’re giving to Belize but it appears that maybe not the intention of the Taiwanese but maybe the politicians in the PUP are using this for their personal political gain and politizing it.”

Ernesto Vasquez, Host, The Morning Show: But that’s not what he said.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition:  “Sir I’m telling you the party position.”

Ernesto Vasquez, Host, The Morning Show: But he’s the Deputy Chairman

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “I am the party leader sir and I am telling you what the party position is. The party position is that we support Taiwan, we reaffirm our support for Taiwan, we stand in solidarity with Taiwan and we are grateful for what Taiwan has done for Belize.”

Taiwan’s Ambassador to Belize, Lily Li-Wen Hsu, did respond to the accusations, saying that they were unfounded and untrue as they have supported both the previous and current administrations.
