The United Democratic Party announced today its official endorsement of three candidates, Dr.Nelma Jones-Mortis, Dr.Abraham Flowers, and Anthony Martinez, as standard bearers for the upcoming 2025 elections to represent different constituencies within Belize City. Dr Nelma Jones-Mortis has been endorsed as UDP’s Standard Bearer for Caribbean Shores. The career educator entered politics last year with hopes of winning the mayoral seat in Belize City. She was, however, deeply defeated by Bernard Wagner who garnered 12,153 votes at the polls while she received 5,806. Dr Jones-Mortis will go up against the current Area Rep, Kareem Musa. In addition, Dr. Abraham Flowers has been sworn in as the UDP Standard Bearer for the Freetown division. His name hit the media back in 2021 when he publicly came out as an anti-vaxxer. He later came in the news as a key player in the Robotics Team at Pallotti High School. Dr. Flowers will run against current Area Rep Francis Fonseca. Lastly, former Port Loyola Area Representative, Anthony Boots Martinez, has come out of retirement and was endorsed today at the UDP Headquarters in Belize City. The 61-year-old has spent the most part of the last two years trying to get the current Area Rep, Gilroy Usher Senior recalled based on votes of no-confidence. His attempts failed. He has, however, been sworn in as the new UDP Standard Bearer for Port Loyola for the upcoming general elections. As the campaign season unfolds, the UDP’s standard bearers will be central figures in the party’s bid to capture the electorate’s support.
