When leader-elect, Patrick Faber, won the leadership convention on July 12, several players in the party announced their resignation from politics. The first was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, followed by Mayor of Punta Gorda Town, Ashton McKenzie, and Orange Walk North Representative, Gasper Vega. Since then, Faber has announced that Vega’s replacement has already been found, and the party is working on finding a new Pickstock standard bearer to replace Elrington.
Hon. Patrick Faber, Leader Elect, United Democratic Party: “Well we’ve not confirmed that Minister Mena will not be seeking reelection just yet I think he’s still in that discernment process I have to confirm that with him; in fact that is not something that he has brought to me as the new leader elect just yet and I have to respect his process but in terms of others we have moved quickly to try to fill the gaps. We now have a new candidate who is Mr.Carlos Zetina for the Orange Walk North constituency where Gaspar Vega has indicated he will not run and as I leave you here today I hope to confirm a candidate for Pickstock.”
Faber stated that by the end of the week they should have the new standard bearers finalized. According to a press release from Percival Lewis, he has been endorsed by Minister Wilfred Elrington to retain the Pickstock division. We reached out to him but our attempts were futile. Additionally, another change has been made within the party. The Deputy Chairman, Alberto August has been appointed as acting Secretary General. August took over the position last week, replacing Pearl Stuart, who left the office earlier this month.
