UDP Senator Steps In to Stop Further Breach at BTL Protest

As tensions escalated during today’s protest at the Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) compound, one opposition figure was seen attempting to prevent the situation from spiraling further.  As UDP supporters breached the BTL compound and were visibly involved in physical confrontations with police officers, UDP Senator Lee Mark Chang positioned himself at the entrance of the BTL building, physically blocking fellow party supporters from forcing their way into the offices.  Chang was assisted by Edward Broaster, the UDP Standard Bearer for Belize Rural Central and a former Deputy Commissioner of Police, who also intervened to prevent additional breaches and confrontations.  In an interview with Love News following the incident, Senator Chang made it clear that while he supports lawful protest and political expression, he does not condone incivility, violence, or the destruction of property.

Chang emphasized that disagreements over national issues must be expressed responsibly and within the bounds of the law, noting that disorderly conduct only undermines legitimate concerns and distracts from the substance of the debate.  Police later regained control of the situation as protesters dispersed. No official word has yet been issued regarding possible charges or injuries stemming from the scuffles
