The United Democratic Party is still in search of a new leader elect. The seat became vacant after John Saldivar enjoyed a mere 72-hours of victory following the February 9 UDP Convention. Saldivar was forced to step down when testimonies emerged of him accepting monies from Lev Dermen who is currently on trial in the US for money laundering. There have been many speculations as to who will succeed Dean Barrow as the UDP Party Leader. Some names being thrown around are Patrick Faber, Omar Figueroa, Hugo Patt, and even John Saldivar but those are merely speculations. The real situation is that the Cabinet does not have the jurisdiction to just appoint a leader. The matter has to go to the National Party Council to have a date set for another convention and a timeline has to be set to have applications submitted. According to Chairman Michael Peyrefitte the convention is set for Saturday, February 29.
We will have more on this subject in tomorrow’s newscast.
