UDP Unity Push Falters Amid Internal Disputes

Efforts to foster unity within the United Democratic Party (UDP) appear to have hit a roadblock, as three prominent members have expressed significant concerns regarding the progress of recent internal meetings.  In a letter addressed to Michael Peyrefitte, Alberto August, Tony Herrera, and Shyne Barrow, three party executives voiced their dissatisfaction with the lack of finalization on key agenda items from a recent meeting.  The concerns for Aldo Salazar, Hugo Patt and Omar Figueroa revolve around the National Party Council (NPC) agenda and membership list.  The letter was reportedly spurred by a public call by the UDP Secretariat for standard bearer applications for 17 electoral divisions, including Belmopan.  With John Saldivar still seemingly hopeful for a re-entry into politics, he posted the letter online from the three executives.  The letter continued, stating, that it was expected that a comprehensive list detailing each NPC member and their qualifying position, which they say was not prepared, reviewed, or circulated as anticipated. They emphasized that this “elementary exercise” was crucial for moving forward in unity and allowing for meaningful input.  Furthermore, they highlighted an unresolved issue concerning the starting point for the membership list, which was to be based on the roll of delegates from the October 2024 convention, with exceptions for those on the “Tracy Ticket.” The authors claim this list was also not circulated for reconciliation and finalization.  Patt, Figueroa, and Salazar asserted that the meeting did not proceed “in the spirit of the proposals from PM Barrow” due to the failure to comply with these important agenda items. They warned that moving forward without a clear consensus on the NPC list would leave the entire process “open to deserved criticism or, worse, expose our actions to potential legal challenges.”  The letter indicates a growing rift within the party as it attempts to solidify its internal structure, with the dispute over the NPC list now posing a significant challenge to the ongoing unity initiative.  Despite the objections and concerns, Love News was informed that the call for standard bearers will proceed as planned.
