As Wagner awaits a response on his possible candidacy in the upcoming elections, Dr Nelma Mortis-Jones has begun her campaign under the UDP umbrella. She made an appearance on the UDP Talk Show this morning where she spoke vaguely on her plans for the city should she be elected.
Dr.Nelma Jones, UDP Mayoral Candidate, Belize City: “There is a major goal there that has to be focused on by government. And one of it has to do with how can we make our cities more sustainable? How can we make our cities increase the livelihood so that we minimize slums and we know that Belize City has developed unplanned because we see a lot of pockets of poverty stricken area and so those are some of the things we have to place on the table. How we will get it done, we will have to rely on each other. Together we can do this. We have to rely on expertise and we have to rely on the data that exists on how to correct that. Belize is not the only country in this kind of stage of development. It’s unfortunate but it is a hope that we can look at other countries and see how they too can support us, especially those that have taken away from us many years ago in terms of you know capital and so forth. I was looking at the party leaders comment with the British High Commissioner that he met with and she had promised to support Belize in any which way as a fact of giving back based on those many years that they have taken from us.”
Interestingly, in a previous news interview, Dr Mortis-Jones, did comment the current mayor on his plans for a smart city, indicating that is a direction she would be going as well, if elected.
