Unions Across the Country Continue Strike Actions

And while Dean Flowers is shifting perspective, the unions continued with their strike action today in several districts. Six and twelve, those are the number of working days that members of the Public Service Union and the Belize National Teachers Union, respectively, have been out of office and the virtual classrooms. They continue to resist a pay cut and increment freeze while demanding good governance. Shortly after nine o’clock this morning, an estimated fifty members of the joint unions gathered at Battlefield Park and picketed through downtown Belize City. Members waved placards as they made their way to the House of Culture where Cabinet ministers were meeting. While those in Belize City headed down Regent Street, union members in Belmopan and Benque Viejo del Carmen Town were staging their own picketing. Up to news time tonight the joint unions continue to reject the already approved ten percent salary cut and the freeze in increments. It will be interesting to see what new developments are on the horizon as Cabinet ministers met for over six hours today with the union’s appeasement requests reviewed. A meeting with government representatives is scheduled for Thursday. We will keep you posted.
