The University of Belize Faculty and Staff Association (UBSCFA) has written to the unions, namely, the Belize National Teachers Union and the Public Service Union. The letter is in relation to the Association’s demand of a 14 percent salary increase. The letter reads, in part, quote, “we write to you on behalf of our members, who are also, concurrently, members of your union. As it is our responsibility to advocate on behalf of our members we feel that your unions are also mandated to do the same. We call on you to exercise your service and representation functions”, end of quote. The Association is also requesting a meeting with the leaders of the BNTU and PSU to discuss their position and the way forward. They want to meet with the unions before Friday, October 23, since that is the deadline they also gave to the President of the University, Alan Slusher for a response for an open negotiation. As we have reported, Slusher has already responded to the Association telling them that they have already received a 5% salary increase and the university is financially unable to give them a 14 percent salary increase at the time.
