Update on Commerce Bight Port Development in Stann Creek
Where is The Briceno Administration on the development of Commerce Bight Port? The Port, which is in Stann Creek district had been abandoned for quite some years now and the Briceno administration established a ministerial subcommittee group that would study the feasibility of developing a port and marina at Commerce Bight. Prior to its desertion, the port was used to ship all their products in the banana industry of the early 1900’s, the citrus industry of the Stann Creek Valley and the oil industry of Spanish Lookout overseas. The subcommittee is being led by Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations and Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance. Love News spoke to Minister Mahler for an update on the development of the Port.
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism: “I think that is going to be a crucial component to the growth and development of this area. We brought some experts in maybe about a year ago and they identified the Commerce Bight Port as a crucial area for development. So we support that project wholeheartedly.”
Henry Arzu, Love FM: When that might come into effect?
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism: “Well hopefully sooner rather than later. You would have to talk to the investors about that.”
The port has been recognized as a crucial area for development as it relates to exporting goods. According to Mahler, the commencement of the port lies in the hands of investors.
