Former Government Minister John Saldivar is still trying to recover his political career that took a nosedive at the start of 2020 when it was discovered that he was taking monies from Lev Dermen and that he had lied to the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the public. His name went as far as Salt Lake City, Utah when text messages were presented in the Dermen trial as evidence of how Dermen used the almost half-billion dollars he illegally received from the US Government. On the local scene, an investigation into Saldivar has begun to see if he carried out any criminal or illegal acts like accepting bribery from Dermen and/or money laundering. Heading that investigation is ACP Marco Vidal. Here is an update on how that investigation is going.
ACP Maco Vidal , Commander of Operations, Belize Police Department: “Marco Vidal: In regards to that matter I cannot speak much about except I can say that the operation is well underway. We are doing a number of things and the scope of the investigation of course is to determine if a crime was committed and what type of crime was committed by the Minister. Our investigation is broad, is wide, and we will ensure that any person who is associated and has something linking him with any kind of criminal activity then we are investigating all of those so it’s not limited or any parameters set that “This is the confines for you to investigate.” As I said it is broad and we will pursue every angle that we have to follow. Like every investigation this investigation requires a bit more work because it’s a different level of investigation but as I have said we have from on the onset have done a number of things already but at it’s due time the Commissioner will determine when a proper briefing will be given to the media and the public but we are not in any way trying to circumvent anything or trying to let the media don’t know. It’s just that once the Commissioner has given the directive that we can bring out certain things then we will but as you all know the matter is not being tried in public, it has to be tried in the court to get a conviction so we don’t want to jeopardize or compromise the operation or investigation in any way. As I said it is under way, it is well under way and there are a number of things that are being done.”
In a publication from the Salt Lake Tribune dated March 8 refers to Saldivar’s involvement with Dermen as one of the three most surreal moments in the Lev Dermen trial as Saldivar resigned mid-trial following the texts messages that were revealed.
