U.S. Senior Advisor for Central America Ambassador Todd Robinson is on a regional trip to coordinate joint efforts to support the Organization of American States, OAS, to foster a peaceful and democratic outcome to the continuing crisis in Nicaragua as agreed upon in an OAS resolution adopted on August 2ND, 2018. The US Embassy says Belize is his first stop as a part of the regional trip. On Wednesday, Ambassador Robinson met with Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington to discuss mutual concerns over the collapse of law and order in Nicaragua and other regional security issues. They also discussed the importance of stopping the violence and supporting negotiations. In his meeting with Prime Minister Barrow, Ambassador Robinson stressed Belize’s significant role in supporting OAS in this region. Furthermore, the release stated that the United States supports Belize’s efforts as President Pro Tempore of the Central America Integration System (SICA) to improve coordination of SICA-CARICOM security efforts and other priorities. It noted that Belize is in a unique position to exercise valued leadership in the region on Nicaragua and many other issues since it has relationship with both Central America and the Caribbean.
