US Government provides financial support to BAHA for medfly program

The US Government, through the US Department of Agriculture, provided two hundred twenty-six thousand dollars to the Ministry of Agriculture for its ongoing medfly program. The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) will use the funds to continue its surveillance efforts of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, despite the insect not being in Belize. The check was handed over this afternoon to Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai by a representative of the US Embassy. Acting Managing Director of BAHA, Francisco Gutierrez, shared how the support will aid in their efforts of keeping the pest out of Belize.

Political and Economic Section Chief at the US Embassy, Andie De Arment, spoke about the US Government’s continued support for Belize’s agricultural sector.
