US Officials Inaugurate High School Addition in Corazon Creek, Helicopters Spotted in Belizean Skies

If you happened to be out west or in the south earlier today, you may have noticed three Black Hawk helicopters in Belize’s airspace.  The flights were headed into the deep south in Corazon Creek where US officials officially inaugurated an addition to the village high school.  US Ambassador to Belize, Michelle Kwan, led the US delegation which included the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian A. Nichols.  A brief ceremony was held on site, followed by brief comments from Kwan and Nichols.

Michelle Kwan, US Ambassador to Belize: “We just had three BlackHawks fly from Belmopan to Corazon Creek to do the ribbon cutting of this school. This is really an $815,000 US dollars commitment in providing educational services to the expanding and growing Toledo district and we are thrilled that we are here.”

Brian A Nichols, US Asst. Secretary of States (Western Hemisphere Affairs): “Very happy to be in Belize. A great partner for the United States. Our cooperation in education, culture, defense, economic growth is a big priority for our government. I’m here to visit to reinforce those areas of cooperation here with Minister Fonseca who is uniquely qualified to show us this as Foreign Minister and Education Minister so we’re very happy to be here.”

The inaugurated project was a new school building that houses two classrooms, a food and nutrition area along with a computer lab.  Additionally, a bathroom facility was constructed and a solar system; a total investment of eight hundred and fifteen US dollars.  Present at today’s inauguration were Minister of Foreign Trade, Francis Fonseca; his Minister of State, Dr Osmond Martinez along with other government officials.  Nichols is currently in Belize on a working visit where he has been holding meetings with government officials on several projects since Saturday.  He has met with Prime Minister John Briceño, Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca, and other senior government officials to discuss security and inclusive economic prosperity in Belize and throughout the region. Assistant Secretary Nichols will also meet with civil society, political and business leaders, and partner organizations.  His business trip to Belize concludes tomorrow.
