US Plans to Place Additional Tax on Remittances to Belize

An online article published in News Americas last Friday has listed Belize as one of the top ten countries that have received money transfers from the United States for 2015.  The statistics were revealed on the heels of the introduction of a Bill in the US that will impose a two percent fee on all money transfers coming to Latin America and the Caribbean.  The Bill, HR1-8-13 or the Border Wall Funding Act of 2017 is aimed at starting the fund for the border wall that US President Donald Trump is intent on getting constructed at its border with Mexico.  Belize was listed at number seven after having received an officially recorded eighty five million US dollars in money transfers for 2015.  The estimates are from the World Bank and also indicates that there about fifty five Belizeans living in the United States.  Dominican Republic topped the list, followed by Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Saint Maarten, St Kitts and Nevis and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.   The Dominican Republic is said to have received as much as five point one billion US dollars in remittances from migrants overseas while Haiti got about two point three billion US dollars.
