The Government of Belize is currently reviewing a proposal from the United States to designate the country as a “Safe Third Country.” This designation would allow the U.S. to reroute asylum seekers to Belize, requiring them to pursue their asylum claims here rather than in the United States. The U.S. has provided draft documents outlining the terms of such an agreement, which are now under review by Belizean authorities. Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca confirmed that the U.S. has formally raised the issue and provided draft documents for Belize’s consideration. These documents are being vetted through the Attorney General’s Ministry. Minister Fonseca emphasized that the matter will proceed to Cabinet only if Prime Minister John Briceño deems it appropriate. He also noted that the U.S. has been respectful in the process and is not pressuring Belize into an agreement.
Fast forward today, and Prime Minister Briceño has indicated that deliberations are ongoing.
The proposed agreement has sparked discussions among various stakeholders in Belize, including human rights organizations and political analysts, who are weighing the potential implications for the country’s immigration policies and international relations. As of now, Belize has not agreed to the proposal, and further consultations are expected before any decision is made.
