Veola Pook’s Family Pursues Option of Her Parole

57-year-old Veola Pook who was sentenced to eight years for manslaughter in the killing of her common-law husband, Orlando Vasquez appeared in court today.  Justice Adolph Lucas ruled that six years and 10 months will be deducted from her sentence; so within the next two year or less Pook is expected to be a free woman. Pook is also eligible for parole, an avenue the family said they would be pursuing. Veola Pook was found guilty of murder in July 2011 and sentenced to life imprisonment. She saw that life sentence squashed by the court of appeal and a retrial re-ordered. On October 13, 2015 Pook pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and on October 22 Justice Lucas heard mitigation pleas on her behalf. Veola Pook is the mother of five children and grandmother to eleven grandchildren.
