A traffic incident over the weekend has claimed the life of a resident of St Matthew’s Village, Cayo District. It was a hit and run incident, and investigators are trying to put the pieces together to make an arrest. Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett spoke to the media on their preliminary findings.
ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Shortly before 8 P.M. police were called to St.Matthew’s Village at the scene of a fatal road traffic accident where they met and spoke with one Hugo Juarez who reported to police that shortly before 8 P.M himself and Mauricio Cortez were walking on the side of the highway from a west to east direction when suddenly he heard a loud bang coming from behind and realized that Cortez was hit by a dark colored small car which sped off leaving him on the ground injured . Upon police arrival at the scene Cortez had apparently already died. The scene was processed and the body was removed to the Western Regional Hospital where it was pronounced dead. We at this time are seeking the public’s assistance in trying to identify that small dark colored car which was eastbound at the time of the accident.”
