Villagers in Middlesex Village, Stann Creek District, are up in arms and say the government is giving them the cold shoulder. The villagers, who are mostly employed in the agriculture sector, say that for years they have been trying to obtain road access to a remote area of the village but have had no luck. On Tuesday, several farmers and the village council decided to take matters into their own hands and attempted to pave the road. But their plans were squashed when the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing informed them that their proposed roadway would encroach on private land. The villagers did not obtain clearance from the Ministry of Natural Resources and were ordered to cease and desist. Chairwoman Britany Roches says the issue is one that the villagers have faced for years and are now hoping that GOB can help them in resolving it.
Ruth Orego, one of the village’s farmers, explained that the residents have made several attempts to obtain permission to install the road but their efforts have been to no avail.
The villagers say they will make another attempt to meet with their Area Rep for a solution.
