Villagers Take Matters Into Their Own Hands: San Pablo Residents Apprehend Armed Robbers in Grocery Store Heist

Residents of San Pablo Village in the Orange Walk district, banded together yesterday to apprehend two men that robbed a grocery store. Just before five-thirty, the two men entered Jay’s Mini Shop and held the cashier and a customer at knifepoint. The men made off with just over sixteen hundred dollars, two bottles of Belikin stout. Their escape was short lived as the villagers sprang into action and detained the men until the police arrived. It was a situation that angered the residents.  Village Chairman, Javier Sabido, said that San Pablo is a peaceful village and the residents will not tolerate anyone trying to disturb that peace. He added that the village council has been lobbying for years to get a police booth installed in San Pablo, and that the situation yesterday emphasizes the need for greater police presence.

Javier Sabido, Chairman, San Pablo Village: “I understand that the robbers had a blunt object and harmed one of the shoppers that were shopping at the moment. Thankfully with the help of the community at the moment they managed to apprehend two of them. I can confirm the robbers are not from San Pablo they are from elsewhere and those are people that come to our peaceful village to do harm. But thankfully our community we have a very vibrant community that they are very helpful in terms of when situations arise like that so they will have access and the community will not be afraid to apprehend any robbers or any persons doing wrong doings in the village. So while the police were on their way to San Pablo as you know we don’t have a police station in the village we had to call the police station in Orange Walk Town so that we get the assistance from the police from Orange Walk Town. I must mention that we do have a community police that is stationed in Douglas Police Substation but you know Douglas is also a few miles away from San Pablo so if we have an incident we would not get police response quickly as we would want. So we will have to wait for a few hours so that we have the presence of police in the field. So that’s why the community is very concerned as well and when things arise like that the community works together along with other business persons so that we do not tolerate this such act in our village. We are very concerned and we are on alert and we wouldn’t want another situation to arise like that and yes we will continue pressing to the local authorities and also to the persons in charge of our security so that they could assist us with more police presence in the villages.”

Police have identified the 26-year-old robbers as Kenny Perez and Esmir Garrido. Love News understands that upon taking custody of Perez and Garrido, Police had observed them having varying degrees of injuries, ranging from swollen eyes, cuts and bruises.
