Violent Ex-Lover Attack: Man Stabs New Boyfriend in Belize City Home Invasion

A man is in police custody after he snuck into the home of his ex-lover and stabbed her new boyfriend.  It is a situation that unfolded this morning just after two o’clock when the couple, 19-year-old, Yasmine Cocom and 22-year-old, Nieri Chuquin, heard a noise in their Cleghorn Street home in Belize City.  When the boyfriend, Chuquin, when to make checks, he came face to face with the ex, whom he instantly recognized.  The ex then proceeded to stab Chuquin as many as six times.  Speaking on behalf of Yasmine is her mother, Sharone Cocom.

Sharone Cocom, Mother of Yasmine Cocom: “When I come this morning we were walking around and we the check and I gone to the back of the house and when I reach the back of the house we see like one of the window pull open, and they had like  a piece of stick, the person used to haul up himself and get into the house. And then when I talk to my son-in-law this is what he told me that when he – him and my daughter were inside laying down and they were talking because that is her baby’s mom’s dad, they were laying down and talking and after they heard a noise. He came outside and Nerry was walking around with a phone and a flashlight checking around and they didn’t see anybody, they checked under the table with the flashlight from the phone and while coming out to the hall he noticed that, she was flashing around and when he reached out by the hall and he was turning around to go back into the room somebody fired stab after him. He had on a black and white shirt tied around his head like his eyes and everything were out but my son in law knows the person good because whenever he comes to get his baby and stuff from my daughter or bring the baby’s pampers and so for the baby they always see each other and sometimes they’d exchange words at each other. So when he grabbed him he fired stabs after him and when he fired stabs at him like he was blocking so that made him get about six stab wounds, a couple on both his hands and under his chin. Well they had already let him out of the hospital and just now we had to rush him back because the wound started to bleed so we just dropped him off at Karl Heusner Hospital.”

Chuquin was taken to the KHMH where he was treated and released.  We understand, however, that he was readmitted a few hours later.  According to the young woman’s mother, Sharone, the ex has had a history of violence towards her daughter, and that on several occasions she had physically hurt her.   

Sharone Cocom, Mother of Yasmine Cocom: “Well she was in a relationship with Tamar and the relationship was abusive and like when I talked to my daughter and I would ask her what is happening in this relationship she would say nothing, it’s all right. And so one time I got a call from her, like a voice message saying “Leave me alone.” so I called her and I was asking her why she sent that voice message she was crying so I asked her what happened and then she told me that how he choked her and they were fighting and it was an abusive relationship to be real with you all. She beats her she fights back you know nobody will leave anybody to hit them, she defends herself and she had a time when her eye was bruised up from where he beat her and it’s just an abusive relationship with those two.”

Yasmine and her ex share a 13-month old child.  Police have detained the attacker, but are unable to levy charges since a statement is still pending from Chuquin.
