Well-known Cayo Man Passes Away

The San Ignacio community is mourning the loss of one of its most upstanding members. This morning, businessman, David Awe died after an illness. Elaine Berry reports on the man, known as “Pops”.

Elaine Berry, Cayo Correspondent: “Well known businessman David Awe Sr. and owner of a popular restaurant named “Pops” died this morning here in San Ignacio. Love News sat down with his son Joseph Awe who told us more about his dad becoming a successful businessman.

Joseph Awe, Son

Joseph Awe, Son: “He lived in the US for about fifteen years and was exposed to the lifestyle out in the US and businesses out there and I guess that’s where “Pop’s” was born, in his mind. And so when he came back to Belize he did a few odd jobs here and there but in his heart he wanted to own his business and eventually he did so. Pop’s has been around for twenty years. It was originally in a neighboring building from where it is right now it’s been where it is currently for five years. Pop’s got it’s name curiously through one of his friends. He had an American friend who thought of him as a father and we all know that that’s the endearing name that Americans give to their father figures “Pops” and this guy used to call my father “Pops” and that’s where he got the name from. So when they started the business it originally started as an ice cream parlor and then it evolved, it graduated into what it is now; a breakfast restaurant basically.”

Elaine Berry, Cayo Correspondent: Tell me some fond memories about your dad.

Joseph Awe, Son: “Well my dad was a fun loving guy. He used to like the outdoors and one thing I can remember that will stay with me is him inviting my kids and I to go fish with him at a friend’s pond and we would go and spend the afternoon just fishing and having fun with the kids and I thoroughly enjoyed it as well as my kids and that’s something that will stay with me forever because it was a family affair and he was involved.”

Elaine Berry, Cayo Correspondent: I also spoke to Abdala Bedran, owner of Running W meats who also shared some fond memories with Pops.

Abdala Bedran, Running W Meats

Abdala Bedran, Running W Meats: “There’s only one Pops there’s no other person, nobody else that matched him. He was a unique guy and we were very good friends even though we are about twenty something years apart but we always were good friends and close and did a lot of things together you know have our little drinks, laugh a lot of laughs and when you were with Pops you would laugh. He’s very lighthearted and very funny and he made people relax when they were around him. Pops was a lot of fun and we had good times.”

Elaine Berry, Cayo Correspondent: Getting to hear the sad news this morning what was your reaction ?

Abdala Bedran, Running W Meats: “Hey it was a surprise. I knew he wasn’t feeling well. I knew he had ups and downs but we had just been together the night before and he was fine so it was kind of shocking. Every time you’re with Pops it’s fun I mean he’s always saying a joke, always coming up with something. He’s witty, you know he has a brain that is unbelievable.”
