Well-Known Gangster Shot Dead in Broad Daylight Attack in Belize City
Tonight, a well-known gangster is dead, and another man is hospitalized after a broad daylight shooting sent bullets flying in Belize City. Just after one o’clock, street figure, 33-year-old Nicholi Rhys, was shot dead after taking his vehicle to be fixed at the home of 27-year-old Jervis Samuels on Neal’s Penn Road. The men were standing in front of Samuels’ residence when a lone gunman on a bicycle rode up and opened fire on them. The men attempted to escape the hail of bullets, but the gunman pursued Rhys and shot him multiple times in the head after falling to the ground. Assistant Commissioner of Police and Officer Commanding the Eastern Division, Hilberto Romero, was on the ground and explained that so far, there is not much the police have been able to ascertain.
Hilberto Romero, Senior Superintendent of Police: “Upon arrival they learned that two male persons had been shot. They were immediately taken to the KHMH where one of them succumbed to his injuries at the KHMH. He has been identified as Nicolai Rhyse and the other victim was shot to the foot and he was identified as Jervis Samuels. One of them lives here and Nicolai Rhyse came to do some work on his car in this area. At some point he was along with the deceased and he received one gunshot to the foot. They were approached and they tried to run away and they were followed by the shooter who then caught up to Nicolai Rhyse up the street. We are working on the information that we have but that has not been established as yet.”
Rhys was no stranger to the law and had a lengthy rap sheet that included charges for murder, robbery, and unlicensed firearms. In 2010, he was accused of killing gang boss Andre Trapp, and in 2018 he was accused of murdering taxi driver Luis Carlos Moh but later walked from that murder charge. The 31-year-old was reportedly associated with a Belize City gang that police say is embroiled in a deadly feud that resulted in the murder of 23-year-old Jasmine Domingo on Monday morning. ///
