A nursery of raccoons is wreaking havoc in the West Landivar area of Belize City. Some residents have raised concerns about an uncontrollable amount of raccoons infesting their properties and the surrounding areas. The son of one of the residents, Jose Espat, explained that the roof of his mother’s house has been taken over by these animals and he is fearful that the ceiling will collapse one day. He says he has contacted the appropriate authorities, but those efforts were in vain. Espat says that his main concern is that one fateful day, one of his children will be attacked.
Another West Landivar resident, Orlando Santos, the owner of Landimar’s Deli, explained that he has been dealing with the same issue. He says that he and his restaurant staff take precautions such as not disposing of leftover food in their trash to not attract them. Santos says that despite their efforts, the critters have taken up residence in his boat.
Espat and Santos say that the growing population of raccoons can be attributed to the high bushes just across from their properties. They are calling out to the City Council to take action and clear the bushes.///
