The Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan has set in place new measures following the announcement of the first COVID-19 case in Belize. Correspondent Fem Cruz spoke with the Regional Manager about these measures and has the details.
Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: Since we had the first case of COVID-19 some three days ago and now the second case, the Western Regional Hospital here in Belmopan are doing all that they can to contain it from spreading. Dr. Javier Zuniga, the Western Region Manager spoke to Love News about those measures that are in place.
Dr. Javier Zuniga, Western Region Manager: “As an update to Western Regional Hospital preparedness for COVID-19 you will notice that at the entrance of the hospital we now have a security placed there that will ask visitors the purpose of their visit and depending on their response they will be directed to the appropriate areas of the hospital. In addition you will notice also that our respiratory flu clinic is now up and running fully, the health personnel out there will assess all patients with flu symptoms right out there, they will provide all the lab testing, the taking of samples and any other service that these patients might need or require right there at that flu clinic. No patient with flu symptoms will be allowed inside the hospital. Thirdly I’m also glad to state that the Western Regional Hospital isolation area is ready to receive any patient with COVID-19 infection and who will require some type of hospitalization for further care and the management is also working on a second isolation unit and temporary operating theater to deal with COVID-19 infected patients so we will have a capacity – at the moment we have a capacity for thirteen but we’re expecting to take that up to about thirty patients.”
