UDP LEADER

Who will be the next UDP leader?

Tonight, there is still uncertainty as to who will take over the leadership of the United Democratic Party (UDP) as Dean Barrow prepares to retire from politics.  For the past two weeks, since John Saldivar’s political career took a critical hit and since his legacy of being the UDP leader-elect for a mere 72 hours, the party has been unsure as to who will step up to the plate.

The latest suggestion came yesterday during the Cabinet meeting in the name of Omar Antonio Figueroa.  Figueroa who has only been in politics for about five years in the Cayo North division garnered majority support in Cabinet yesterday despite his political career still in its infancy stage.  Love News understands that Figueroa was supported but was told that there are things he would need to change should he decide to vie for the leadership.  Of course, Cabinet meetings are to be strictly confidential but were told that Figueroa has agreed to consider the idea and consult with his family on the matter.  The 51-year-old politician was turned to after Hugo Patt turned down the idea to go in for the leadership seat.  All things considered, we cannot take our eyes off the formidable Patrick Faber.  Faber is yet to decide if he will contest the next leadership convention and says he will have a decision soon.  Faber was not present at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting as he is out of the country and is slated to return on Friday; just in time for the UDP’s National Party Council meeting on Saturday.  While several persons and agencies have been reporting that Figueroa is the new leader-elect, it is to be noted that Cabinet does not have the powers or jurisdiction to appoint or select a leader.  At Saturday’s NPC meeting, a date for the next convention will be discussed as well as the timeline for applications from aspiring leaders. Love News will be at the NPC and will have reports following the meeting.
