It is an election year, and, in a few months, the heavy campaigning and maneuvering are expected to shift into high gear. One of the factors that the opposition party has always been concerned over is financing and the abuse of resources of the Government by the ruling party. When asked recently if the PUP is ready for the polls, Party Leader John Briceno, gave an affirmative response, despite not knowing when the election will be called.
Hon. John Briceno, Opposition Leader: “We know that there’s going to be a leadership convention next month, the Prime Minister has been giving mixed signals, at one time he’s saying he’s going to step down when the new leader is elected at other times he’s says he’s going to stay until the end and he’s going to call the elections. To us it doesn’t matter we are getting prepared, we’re working on our policies, we should be having most of our policies ready by the end of this month. We have been organizing all the constituencies and getting battle ready so if they want to have an early election great for us and if they want to have a later election well ni modos we just have to wait. We are doing our work, we’re campaigning, we’re organizing, we’re preparing our policies, how is it that we’re going to change this country, how is it that we’re going to bring improvement and hope, how we’re going to address the issue of corruption, crime, the economy the three most pressing issues in the minds of our citizens.
According to Briceno, there are still a few divisions where the PUPs need to elect a Standard Bearer.
Hon. John Briceno, Opposition Leader: “Officially we haven’t done Fort George and I think it’s Cayo West but certainly in Cayo West we have a person that has already expressed serious interest and we’re considering having that person be our candidate. I do believe that our people are not easily sold. I think Belizeans have reached to a point where they are already fed up, they have lost hope in this government, they have given this government the opportunities to manage our affairs for twelve years and today we have more poverty, we have more crime, we have more unemployment, our economy is in recession; by every metric Belize has not gone forward it has gone backwards and people want hope and they see that in the PUP right now. Our party is united we are coming up with some very good policies how we’re going to tackle crime, how we’re going to tackle the issue of the economy, corruption, creating opportunities for everybody. So I do have every confidence in the Belizean people that whenever they call elections be it in a months time or two months time we’re going to be ready and we have every confidence that we’re going to have a new government, a government led by the People’s United Party.”
General Elections are due by November 2020.
