Health officials have conducted a total of 82 tests for COVID-19 up to four o’clock this evening. This is according to the Minister of Health, Pablo Marin. Of the 82 tests carried out, there have only been two confirmed cases. The first case was declared on Monday morning with Patient Zero being a resident of San Pedro Town. Patient Zero, as reported by the Prime Minister yesterday, is recovering quickly as she had a mild case of the COVID-19 strain. What the Prime Minister also noted was that Patient Zero had not been honest with health officials as she had first indicated to them that she had gone into immediate self-isolation when she flew into Belize last Thursday. It is an offense that she committed and according to the Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte, she could face legal repercussions.
Rt.Hon Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize: “The second case is what was to have been feared in circumstances such has occurred where the first confirmed case did not self isolate as she first claimed to have done and mixed in freely with the other members of her household and unfortunately her mother, I don’t know the age of the mother, became infected.
Hon. Michael Peyrefitte, Minister of National Security: “There’s a general law in the Quarantine Act that we’re certainly looking into that. We have to determine and we believe that she was warned upon arriving at the airport in Belize to immediately inform the Ministry of Health and to immediately self isolate, by failing to do that she may have committed an offence we’re currently looking at that as we speak and I’m telling you if the evidence lines up that she committed that offence we will certainly charge her with that offence.”
According to Peyrefitte, it is the personal obligation of every person who demonstrates similar symptoms to those attached to COVID-19 to report it immediately.
Hon. Michael Peyrefitte, Minister of National Security: “Anybody who develops flu like symptoms and who reasonably suspects that he may have had contact with someone who has traveled to a country affected by COVID-19 or is infected with COVID-19 please immediately inform the ministry with responsibility for health. If you don’t feel well and you believe you’ve contacted somebody with COVID-19 or who has been to a country with COVID-19 please contact the Ministry of Health. Go into self isolation in accordance with the guidelines of the ministry responsible for health. If you’re not feeling well immediately isolate yourself and contact the Ministry of Health until they come to you and from there they will take the lead on what you should or shouldn’t do. Every person who enters into Belize from any port of entry, whether you’re a Belizean or not, you shall immediately inform the ministry with responsibility for health of your entry into Belize and go into self isolation in accordance with the guidelines with of the ministry with responsibility for health. So if you come in to Belize tonight, even if you’re a Belizean, you must inform the Ministry of Health and you must go into self isolation until you can be analyzed by the Ministry of Health.”
