How will the re-registration exercise affect Belizeans living abroad?

Belizeans United for Equal Rights at Home and the Diaspora (BUFERHD) has written an open letter to the Chief Elections Officer, Josephine Tamai. In the letter, BUFERHD’s President, Derek Aikman, points out to Tamai that all Belizeans living in the diaspora will quote “lose their voting status once the current list becomes obsolete at the commencement of the approaching re-registration process.” End of quote. When that happens, Belizeans living abroad must be in Belize for two months in order to meet requirements to re-register. This, Aikman says will disfranchise many Belizeans who live abroad. We asked Tamai for a comment.

The re-registration exercise begins on July 2.
