Witness Behind Bars: Giovanni Ramirez Arrested Amidst Selgado Trial

In an ironic twist, while Selgado is in prison awaiting the transcripts of his trial, the key witness in the matter, Giovanni Ramirez, has also ended up in jail.  Ramirez was picked up under the State of Emergency late last month.  While he had escaped the initial raids, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams confirmed this evening that Ramirez is behind bars. One of Selgado’s supporters and colleague, Attorney Michelle Trapp of the Association of Defense Attorneys, also weighed in on Ramirez being wanted by police, saying that it came as no surprise to her.

Michelle Trapp, Attorney: “On the issue as it relates to this wanted poster that I’ve seen being circulated with regards to police wanting Mr.Giovanni Ramirez in the context of Oscar Selgado’s case let it be known that Ramirez stood before the court as a person of bad character because the testimony from Chester Williams the Commissioner of Police was that he is a gang affiliate, he is an affiliate of a criminal gang. He had a previous conviction for handling stolen property, stolen goods, and that there was also the issue of what he said in the statement that he never planned to kill anybody he was just bribing Oscar basically, get money from Oscar over and over but he never intended to kill anybody so he basically said that in his statement as it relates to that. And so it’s no surprise then that there would be a wanted poster out for him because he is a person of bad character the Commissioner himself said it in open court.”

Ramirez appears in our news archives several times including an incident for an unlicensed firearm which is said to have been the reason he crossed paths with Selgado, and more recently he had been knocked down and stabbed in Belize City.
