Several persons are now homeless after a house fire last night on Wagner’s Lane, Belize City. Three brothers, 19-year-old Tyrone Flowers, 21-year-old Sherwin Flowers, and 18-year-old Tyler Murrillo, resided in the 12 by 30 wooden structure that was completely destroyed. Other houses in the area were also damaged but the National Fire Service was able to extinguish it before it could completely destroy another home. According to one of the neighbors he heard one of the brothers arguing with his girlfriend and, shortly after, the house was set on fire.
Neighbor: “I live in this house over on this side to the right and me and my family members were relaxing last night me, my wife and kids and I overheard an argument in this yard with my neighbor. The elder of the house is in the Cayes working, a lady, and she left about five of our sons in here controlling the house. I heard an argument I heard somebody talking about “You won’t have a house to live in tonight.” so I came out of my house to see what was happening. When I look it was a young lady, another young man that is not from here had a disagreement with the two sons that live in this yard here. I came out and I diffused the problem I told them to get out of the place before they get hurt because they’re starting problems in a neighborhood that has gotten tired of seeing problem you know ? The young men left I went back in my house and maybe fifteen minutes after the police came they didn’t see anybody they left and the brethren came back with the female and it looked like they lit these people’s house on fire – I don’t want to sound like I’m throwing anything at anyone but we have people that saw -and they came back in the yard, started a fight with the two sons. They ran over to the neighbor’s yard and left their house for the people to do anything to it. Man, people are merciless – just threw something in here and lit up the lady’s place on fire. Let me just say this I want to big up that team that worked last night fr the fire station, those guys really performed top class last night. This entire area could have gotten wiped out, spread and spread but those guys came and they did their thing properly and we got to save my uncle’s house next to my one but my one got damaged too.”
According to the Station Officer for the National Fire Service, Orin Smith, the investigation is indeed pointing to arson.
Orin Smith, Station Officer, National Fire Service: “One entry had to come through an alley way literally over a fence, part of the fence was knocked down, to gain access to the property the fire was on. According to information from the residents within the area the department did a very good job in containing the fire and impeding the spread of the fire to engulfing other neighboring structures. We normally have good working relations with the police department in terms of security of the scene, preventing civilians from actually getting into the way of the fire department initiating its initial duties. We had good control of that we didn’t get any negative reports on that yesterday evening. Even BEL responded on scene and the response of BERT so the collaboration of the agencies continued in good spirits. Investigations revealed from the interviewing of witnesses within the area indicate that a female and two other companions visited the structure and shortly after they had left the fire was seen.”
