Women’s Sanitary Products Will be Tax-Free Items Due to GOB’s Policy Change

The Government of Belize has removed the General Sales Tax (GST) from women’s sanitary products which will come into effect at the beginning of the upcoming fiscal year that begins on April 1. The decision was made after the GOB recognized the importance of these products as essential household items. The President of the National Women’s Commission, Thea Garcia-Ramirez, says this move is expected to ease the financial burden on women who previously had to pay the 12.5% GST on these products, making them more affordable and accessible to all. She adds that this policy change further cements Belize’s position as a regional leader in promoting women’s rights.
