A mother and her five children were disturbed in the middle of the night last night when the house they were sleeping in collapsed. The family had already retired for the night when a consistent cracking sound was heard coming from under the house. The head of the household, Elizabeth Smith, responded quickly and woke her children up just in time before the house collapsed. Smith told Love News that she has been living there for three years but has been unable to repair the house. She is a single mother of five children as her husband passed away a few years ago.
Elizabeth Smith, Mother: “I’m a mother of five kids. I’m a widow, my husband passed away five years ago. I have five kids for him two boys, three girls and this is the home that I was living in for three and a half years because this is my father’s lot because I was living at my in-laws and we had gone through a slight misunderstanding and they wanted me off their lot so I ended up here for three and a half years since I lived in the house. The house got old on me and said it was time to drop so I really would need the help of someone helping me at least with a one bedroom house for me and my five kids. So that is why I really need the help, a roof over me and my kid’s head before this hurricane season happens.”
Courtney Menzies, Love FM News: So what time last night did this happen ?
Elizabeth Smith, Mother: “A little bit after twelve the house just started to creak and the whole thing collapsed in.”
Courtney Menzies, Love FM News: Did anyone get injured ?
Elizabeth Smith, Mother: “No thank God me and my five kids are okay, just that the house damaged but our life is God thank God for it.”
The children were unharmed in the incident. The family is now forced to live with Smith’s father until they can do better. For persons willing to help Smith, she can be contacted at 603-4198. According to Micah Goodin, the Mayor of Belize has agreed to assist the family with some of the labour and finance needed for rebuilding a house.
