The Hummingbird Highway will be getting a major restoration following the Government’s acquisition of a loan from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting countries. The loan was approved in February 2015 and the successful contractor, following a bidding process, is A & N Construction Limited based in the Cayo District. The 54-mile long Hummingbird Highway was divided into four segments with two segments being the initial concern in today’s contract signing. The two segments are from the Belmopan Roundabout to the Sibun Bridge and from Alta Vista Bridge to Dangriga Town. Refurbishment of the thoroughfare includes road pavement, with a specific view to create an environment, safer for the public as well as improvements to the vertical and horizontal alignment, especially in areas that pose a high risk to motorists. There will also be the replacement of existing single lane bridges which will subsequently, improve road characteristics and reduce road users’ risks. The shoulders of the highway will also be enhanced with high visibility line marking, reflective road studs, bus stops among other features aimed at meeting internationally recognized standards. The Ministry of Works and Transport conducted the contract signing today which carried a value of just under sixteen point five million dollars. Works are expected to begin immediately.
