Workshop Aims to Improve Quality of Dragon Fruit in Northern Belize

Dragon Fruit Farmers in northern Belize participated in a two-day workshop this week to improve the quality of their produce. The workshop was held at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station in Orange Walk, hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation (BMDC), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. In an interview yesterday, Sergio Tillett, Senior Projects Officer for the BMDC spoke on the role each partner organization plays in the training.

Sergio Tillett, Senior Projects Officer: We are working in conjunction with the with the JICA team along with the Ministry of Agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture is taking care of the practical side, the technical side in which they’re training people as to how to do the cultivation of dragon fruit, training them about the good agricultural practices to ensure that they’re getting the best fruit possible. JICA is the overall team that is covering all the expenses for this project and what the BMDC is doing since we are the marketing arm of the Ministry of Agriculture Enterprise. We are doing basically the part in which we’re going to be showcasing what the BMDC is doing, how we are marketing the dragon fruit for the farmers that are already in production and that is the part of the segment that we’ll be presenting tomorrow. Today at the Yo Creek Station in Orange Walk the Ministry of Agriculture is showing all the technical size, the planting, the harvesting, and the different procedures that farmers need to undergo. And tomorrow the BMDC will be doing a presentation in which we’ll be doing, showcasing the different products that will come out from the natural fruit and also what the BMDC can do to assist farmers to market their produce.”

Farmers participated in discussions on various topics, including propagation, weed control, fertilization, and intercropping.
