World Bank’s 2024 Learning Poverty Report Highlights Gaps in Belize’s Education Data

The World Bank released its 2024 report on Learning Poverty in Belize. Learning Poverty refers to the measurement or data collected on the quality of education and its accessibility.  According to the report, Belize has failed in gathering the necessary data that would give a clearer idea or picture of where the country actually is in its education output.  This has been cited as a problem for the World Bank and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  The groups note that Belize has not issued a report under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4.1.1 for the past four years.  Additionally, the report has concluded, in its assessment of other areas, that 75 percent of students do not achieve the Minimum Proficiency Level (MPL) at the end of primary school, and that 76 percent of children in Belize at late primary age today are not proficient in reading.  With all the data presented in the report, Love News understands that the report may actually be skewed as it uses a generic measuring guide based on the standards in developed countries.  We further understand that the reports presented do not reflect current policy changes or data as the information used in formulating the document are usually three to four years old.  The Learning Poverty Report 2024 presented an assessment of more than 100 countries and concluded that Poverty Learning, ‘is unacceptably high, and that in low- and middle-income countries, more than half the children cannot read and understand a short age-appropriate text by the end of primary school.’
