The Ya’axché Conservation Trust hosted its Farmers’ Expo last Friday in Toledo District. Today, the organization announced its Maya Golden Landscape Farmers of the Year. Nancy Belinda Perez is the beekeeper of the year. She and her sister have been running an apiary since 2018. Vicente Makin is the Inga Alley Cropping Farmer of the Year. A resident of Indian Creek, Makin uses knowledge he received from climate-smart training he received from the organization to plant cacao and other fruits to maintain soil fertility. The emerging agro-forestry farmer is Martin Ack, whose farming practices shifted from slash-and-burn to the use of bio-fertilizers to produce various products including yams, pineapples, ingas, oranges, plums and peppers. The Organized Group of the Year is the Green Creek Farmers’ Cooperative, which advocates for the use of bio-fertilizers, GPS readings and agro-forestry training to create fertile agricultural spaces in southern Belize.
