Youth advocate and activist, 22-year-old Shayanne Dena recently returned from Chile where she attended the Beijing plus twenty-five Latin America and the Caribbean Youth Regional consultation. Dena, who is one of our video editors at Love FM, was the Belizean representative for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). According to Dena, other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are fighting to establish measures that Belize already have in place, putting us steps ahead in many ways.
The forum provided the participants with a platform to share their work and knowledge, to develop inter-institutional cooperation around gender equality and online participation mechanisms, as well as to build networks of support amongst each other. In 1995, the fourth World Conference on Women took place in Beijing, one of the largest gatherings of defenders of gender equality in history. This is where the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was born. The Declaration consultation aims to explore how to bring policy into action, to map youth engagement with the Beijing Platform for Action and Agenda 2030, and to identify their significance for youth-led strategies and gender equality priorities.
