There is another milestone that Belize’s health sector is looking at, and that is noted improvement in the child mortality rate. According to UNICEF, the child mortality rate refers to the probability of dying between birth and exactly five years of age. Health Minister Bernard told Love News that it has been over a year since there has been a child death within the hospitals.
Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness: “As a matter of fact as you know over the past 15 months from February last year to now we have not had a single child mortality death within the hospital setting. So that again is to show you the level of care that is being taken place within the country. We may sometimes be looked down upon as a government or as a country but trust me we have some of the best care that sometimes you might take for granted and this is where we always say we just need to ensure that we continue to put our best foot forward in achieving those goals and objectives that are set out in the country’s strategies and of course in our health policy across this country.”
