Interdicted Seaman to be Dismissed with Disgrace from the Belize Coast Guard

Former seaman of the Belize Coast Guard, Keyren Lavaun Tzib, has been convicted of attempted murder in the courtroom of Justice Candace Nanton.  The guilty verdict was handed down today; nine years after the 33-year-old was charged for shooting a coast guard colleague in April 2015.   Even with a guilty verdict, Tzib was released on bail of fifteen thousand dollars with three sureties of five thousand dollars each.  The prosecution did object to bail, but her attorney, Darrell Bradley appealed to the court for leniency considering Tzib’s diagnosis of post-trauma stress disorder (PTSD).  Tzib’s trial began in January, during which the victim, Kurt Hyde, testified, saying he was driving a Coast Guard vessel from San Pedro to the headquarters when Hyde shot him in the back of the head with an M-16 Carbine Rifle.  The bullet exited Hyde’s face, resulting in partial facial paralysis.  The incident took place in the presence of several colleagues.  During the trial, Tzib told the court that she fired the shot accidentally, but the judge declined to believe her testimony and rendered the guilty verdict.  The bail granted today comes with the condition that Tzib must have therapy sessions with the public psychiatrist, Dr. Matus for a psychiatric evaluation and that she must report to the Orange Walk Police Station three times each week.  She is also required to report weekly to the High Court until the date of her sentencing.  Additionally, she must not interfere with the victim.  Furthermore, Tzib must cooperate with the Department of Human Development for a report on her progress which is to be submitted to the court, and must surrender all travel documents.  Shortly, after the incident, Tzib was interdicted from the Belize Coast Guard.  Love News understands that with the guilty verdict, she will be dismissed from the Belize Coast Guard.  Tzib was unable to meet bail today.
