Coastal Plains Highway Flooding Raises Concerns for MIDH

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) is concerned about the level of flooding observed this week on the Coastal Plains Highway, particularly at the Mile 15 Manatee Bridge. The highway was deemed impassable due to flood waters for most of Friday after some areas received as much as 13 inches of rainfall in an eight-hour span. Chief Engineer in the Ministry, Evondale Moody, explained that the current Manatee Bridge was inaugurated last year, and stands considerably higher than its wooden predecessor. Despite the elevation, flood waters still came right under the new bridge. Moody says the issue is alarming because projections were for such an occurrence to only occur once within the next hundred and twenty-five years.

Moody says that the MIDH will be closely monitoring the area this weekend, as more rains are expected late this evening going into Sunday
