The Institute of Archaeology, a branch of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), has announced a delay in the implementation of new entrance fees for Belize’s Archaeological Reserves. Initially set to take effect on November 1, 2024, the revised fee structure will now be introduced on January 1, 2025. The postponement comes after stakeholders expressed the need for more time to prepare for the changes. It also allows for the completion of legislative processes required before the new fee system can be enforced. This extended period will enable further consultations with stakeholders to address any concerns or questions regarding the fees and their objectives. The Institute of Archaeology emphasized its dedication to preserving Belize’s archaeological heritage while maintaining accessibility for both residents and international visitors. The revenue from the adjusted fees will fund crucial projects, including the protection and restoration of archaeological structures and artifacts, improvements to visitor facilities, and the expansion of conservation and educational programs aimed at safeguarding Belize’s historical assets for future generations. In addition to supporting the Institute’s efforts, the revised fees will contribute to broader NICH initiatives that promote cultural, historical, and artistic preservation throughout Belize.
