The health of Belize’s barrier reef showed improvement for the first time in five years, according to data from the 2024 Mesoamerican Reef Report Card. The environmental NGO Healthy Reef for Health People launched the new report card today, noting that it compiles reef data from four countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. Rafael Martinez, Country Coordinator at Healthy Reefs for Healthy People explained that, despite the marginal progress, the reef’s overall health remains poor. Martinez says that a major contributor to the reef’s poor health is climate change.
Martinez says that the report also contains a call to action, for countries around the world to collaborate to address climate change. He says that part of that issue is holding developed countries accountable for their carbon emissions.
Healthy Reefs for Health People notes that positive and negative actions taken in any of the four countries can impact the reefs of the others.
