CWIL Hosts Online Forum on Tackling Gender-Based Violence in Belize

The Belize Chapter of Caribbean Women in Leadership (CWIL) is hosting an open online forum tonight to discuss issues surrounding gender-based violence. The forum is part of the activities for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and seeks to bring together various stakeholders. Dr. Maxine McKay, Acting Chair of CWIL Belize, says the forum is open to all who are interested, as tackling gender-based violence requires a collaborative approach. She noted that tonight’s session is the last of three held this week, aimed at changing mindsets surrounding the issue.

Dr.Mazine McKay, ACTG, Chairperson, CWIL Belize: “During the course of the 16 Days we are engaging along with other organizations in different activities to bring awareness and empowerment among women and girls and of course men and boys about gender-based violence. However, the primary purpose of our forums that we’re having is to raise awareness about the gender-based violence and of course to foster a mind-set shift among women and girls and also men and boys. By engaging in open discussions we aim to empower participants with knowledge, tools and confidence to recognize, resist and respond to gender-based violence. The forum seeks to create a supportive environment for sharing experiences, learning from one another and advocating for a culture of respect and equality. One of our main objectives is to bring awareness and how do we intend to do that? We want to increase understanding of gender-based violence and its impact on individuals and communities. We seek to help to foster a mindset change. We want to challenge and transform societal attitudes and mindsets that enable gender-based violence, emphasizing equality, respect, and dignity.”
The 16 Days of Activism began on November 25 and will end on December 10.
