A Candlelight Vigil was held last night at the Welcome Center in San Ignacio. The vigil was held in remembrance of the ten persons who perished in the RTA on Mile 69 and a half of the George Price Highway. The event was a night of prayer and worship but also a night of giving. The coordinators of the event joined the “Just a Dollar” initiative which is aimed at providing the families of the victims with financial help during this time. Our newsroom spoke with Benjamin Garcia, attendee, who told us about what took place as well as his new partnership with the Just a Dollar initiative.
Benjamin Garcia, Attendee: “What happened was that it was a call to action. I believe it was done by Aaron Mai and a few other guys, for the community to come together in solidarity with the families that lost their loved ones over the weekend in that accident. And the idea was to be there to share some words of encouragement for the loved ones. We saw this Scouts coming out as well in support of of their loved one who was Mr. Jaheem, you know, he was very loved in the community and everybody else you know, despite the weather conditions, I must say that I’m very proud to see San Ignacio and Santa Elena come out in numbers the way they did because, you know, despite the rain they were right out there and they had their candles. Also kudos to Minister Micho. We also had Minister Balona. We also have Minister Habet and as well as our mayor, Mr. Earl Trapp, Aaron Mai was there as well. So beyond politics, this wasn’t anything about UDP/PUP it was really just a community coming together for all these families. We also had Passe, who was there and I accompanied him because he was also there to promote his dollar drive, you know, to collect funds and I actually posted a video on Facebook and it showed, you know, so much support. A lot of people were there, you know, everybody just putting their grain of sand towards the cause.”
As of this morning, the total raised with the Just a Dollar initiative was $18,709.42.
