Belizean and Mexican authorities recently met as some 15 to 20 thousand visitors are expected to transit into Mexico via the Subteniente López (Mexico) and Santa Elena (Belize) border crossings. It is also expected that thousands of Mexicans will be coming into Belize to traverse the Corozal Free Zone over the long weekend. Love News understands that the meeting included discussions on the smooth flow at the border for travelers. Both sides agreed that immigration and customs services should be respectful and efficient. The meeting was led by Belize’s Consul in Chetumal, José Luis Kelly who emphasized the economic value of cross-border travel and urged travelers to report any concerns. With thousands of Belizeans expected to visit popular Mexican tourist destinations, immigration officials on both sides of the border are stepping up operations to manage the surge in holiday traffic. Mexico remains a top vacation choice for Belizeans during the Easter holidays, with many flocking to Mexico’s coastline. However, officials are reminding the public that the journey is not without risks. In recent years, Mexico has faced an uptick in organized crime, particularly in the Chetumal area. While these developments have raised concerns, Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico, Oscar Arnold, has reassured the public that travel remains safe, provided basic precautions are taken. He shared some tips for Belizeans looking to head north over the weekend.
Ambassador Arnold noted that often times Belizeans are involved in fender-benders in Mexico and encouraged travelers to obtain the necessary car insurance to avoid facing penalties.
Ambassador Arnold noted that in the case an emergency Belizeans can contact the Embassy of Belize in Mexico.
